FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam which is a national level exam. This exam is conducted by NBE twice a year in the month of June and December.
FMGE is a licensure exam that is conducted for candidates who are Citizens of India/ Overseas Citizen of India who have completed their Medical Degree awarded by a Foreign College or University and are desirous of getting Provisional or Permanent registration with MCI.
We are often asked about the importance of this exam and why medical graduates who have completed their MBBS from some other country need to clear this exam.

FMGE exam is an important for all those medical graduates who have completed their MBBS from some other country and desire to initiate their professional life in India. This test is mandatory for such candidates in order to practice medicine in the country. Once you clear this exam you become equivalent to all those medical graduates who have completed their MBBS from India and then you can also choose any lucrative career options available for you.
Basically, this test is conducted to check your basics, application of concepts, your common sense and your time management skills. Such exams don’t demand from you to remember the entire data, it just requires you to be familiar with the core of any data so that you are able to pick the correct option from the options provided.
Thus, if you really want to start your career in India then you have to clear this exam. After clearing FMGE exam, you also need to complete 1 year internship only then you fulfill the eligibility criteria. Failure to this, will keep you unemployed in India.
There are certain rules and regulations for FMGE like candidate will be considered as passed only if he/she scores a minimum of 50% marks. There is no restriction on the number of times candidates can appear for the test.
Statistically, it has been noted that only about 19% candidates are able to clear this exam. Even it has been noted that from 2005 to 2015, there’s been a drop of about 80% in Indian medical graduates from foreign universities passing the mandatory screening test conducted by NBE.
Passing rate is so low that it is recommended to practice for this exam as much as possible. Take sample tests for practice that will familiarize you with this exam and will increase your chances to clear it.
Though it is considered to be one of the toughest exams conducted but there is a saying “Practice makes an individual perfect”, so keep practising and be confident and keep repeating to yourself that “ Yes, I can solve 75 out 150 in each paper very easily; I will do it”.
