For the mapping part, one has to read the Atlas on a regular basis. The start has to be made with the study of the location of major landforms. Multiple mapping exercises like identifying the countries through which the equator goes will help generate broad awareness about the World map.
After that identify rivers, mountain ranges and other landforms. Then focus on the political and geographical map of India. After these basic exercises, one has to develop the habit of using the atlas regularly. Whenever you come across a new and important place in the news, please mark it on the atlas. One can also paste a world and India map on the walls of the room. In free time, one should study them thoroughly to develop a broad awareness of the locations.
